On the day Hsuan-sha was to give the day’s sermon, he took his place in front, but before he could say a word, a swallow began to chirp outside the window. Rather than speak, he tilted his head to the side and listened. When the bird flew away, he said. “What a profound discourse on reality and a clear exposition on the devotion of things.” Then he walked back to his seat and sat down.
